Bird Cage
A bird cage is an enclosure used for keeping pet birds. Often sold in pet shops, a bird cage can be made of acrylic, stainless steel or wrought iron.
Types of bird cage
A bird cage can come in any of the several bird cage types intended for various functions.
- Breeding bird cage
A breeding bird cage is usually composed of two connected bird cage compartments separated only by a panel, which can be removed to allow birds to breed. - Flight bird cage
A flight bird cage is a large cage intended to house several birds. This type of bird cage allows birds to fly freely within its compartment. It has several feeders and perches to cater to several birds at once. Because it allows birds to take full flight, birds have a chance to do more exercise. But even though this type of bird cage seems ideal, not all types of birds can live well in a flight bird cage. Only the bird types that are accustomed to that much space must be placed in a flight bird cage. - Playtop bird cage
A playtop bird cage provides enough space to allow a bird to explore its freedom outside its cage and exercise. Playtop bird cages usually have solid tops where bird food and bird litter are effectively collected. - Meanwhile, a dometop bird cage is a type of playtop bird cage that is spacious enough to allow pet birds to play. The dome or top of the cage allows pet birds to see above the bird cage.
- Parrot perch
A parrot perch, on the other hand, is usually intended for larger bird types. Parrot perches can be made of concrete, rope or wood. - Single bird cage
Intended for only one bird, a single bird cage comes in different sizes for different bird types and sizes. This bird cage type is usually hung at a level of about as high as the human chest. - Travel bird cage
A travel bird cage is a relatively smaller cage used for transporting a bird. The ideal size for a travel bird cage is one that allows pet birds to be comfortable during the travel.
There are also other types of bird cages intended for specific bird types. There are cages made especially for parrots, mynahs, canaries and other common pet bird breeds.
Choosing bird cages
When choosing the type of bird cage to get for your pet bird, the following factors must be considered:
- the type or breed of your pet
- the size of your pet bird
- your pet's natural behaviour (Does it love room, flying and exercise?)
Usually larger and longer bird cages are better than tall and narrow ones. Cages made of stainless steel are usually the best, though powder coated metal and acrylic also make good choices. Regular cleaning is needed to ensure good bird health.
