THE Randwick crowd gathered as one and gave English jockey Lester Piggott a hero's reception after he won the final event on So Keen.
"On ya, Lester!" That was the cry as Piggott returned to scale.
The crowd around the bird-cage enclosure after the Amalie Plate (1,200m) was the biggest at Randwick for some time.
And, they were there for one reason-to cheer Lester Piggott.
There is no doubt that Lester has been a huge drawcard for Sydney racing and with his appearance at Quirindi on Monday the country racegoers have plenty to look forward to.
When asked if he had ridden at Quirindi before Piggott replied: "I've never heard of the place." Fifty-nine-year-old Piggott gave the perfect display on So Keen giving the mare the run of the race.
Piggott settled So Keen on the fence behind Miss Kariba and The Olley and ambled off the fence at the 300-metre mark.
Under hands-and-heels riding, Piggott drew level with Lisa Cropp on Miss Kariba at the 150-metre mark and the two riders were set for a ding-dong duel.
Piggott and So Keen prevailed.
