Return Of National Bird Show A Feather In City's Cap

Newcastle Herald

Monday July 12, 2004

By MATTHEW KELLY

BIRD lovers from around Australia flocked to Newcastle for the 29th National Canary and Cage Bird Exhibition.

It has become Australia's biggest and most colourful bird show since it began in Newcastle in 1976.

The weekend's exhibition was the fifth time it has come to Newcastle and included canaries, finches, budgerigars, lovebirds and parrots from every state.

Northern NSW Canary and Cage bird exhibition committee secretary Vicki Edwards said although bird keeping had declined generally, competition remained fierce at the top level.

"There's still a lot of older people and younger kids who like to breed them to reach a certain standard," Ms Edwards said.

"There's so many other things competing for kids' attention these days. They often come in for a while but tend to drop out."
